Kretek cigarettes were originally discovered by H. Djamhari in 19880 in the Holy City. This is why Kudus is called the City of Kretek. At that time, H. Djamhari was a smoker. He also often feels short of breath. When he feels tight, then he uses clove oil to treat the tightness. Until one day he tried to mix tobacco leaves with the leaves for him to smoke. As a result, the experiment resulted in the result of clove cigarettes. Called kretek cigarettes because the fire that burns cloves produces technical noise.
The Djarum clove cigarette company itself was established on August 25, 1950 with the help of 10 workers. Oei Wie Gwan, a former cigarette agent of Minak Djinggo in Jakarta, initially supplied Roko for the Angkot Army Service. In 1955 then Djarum began to increase production and expand its marketing. PT Djarum's production was even greater after the company used spinning machines and tobacco processing machines.
Business fields
PT Djarum processes and produces clove cigarettes and cigars. There are three types of cigarettes we know so far. First, cigars made from tobacco leaves are then wrapped in tobacco leaves. Second, white cigarettes made from tobacco leaves are then wrapped in cigarette paper. Third, kretek cigarettes made from tobacco with clove leaves and then wrapped in cigarette paper.
Within a day, PT Djarum can generate a turnover of around Rp. 23.66 billion. Target marketing alone is not only in Indonesia but also to other countries such as Austria, France, Poland, Spain, Turkey, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Luxemburg, Japan, Canada, Brazil, Malaysia, USA and several other countries.
